Brief History of Cainta

1571

Cainta was established as a settlement during the Spanish colonial period. The name "Cainta" is believed to derive from a word meaning "river bend," reflecting the town's geography along the Marikina River.

1694

The Augustinian friars established the parish of Cainta, building the first stone church dedicated to San Andres Apostol, the patron saint of the municipality.

1897

The Battle of Cainta took place during the Philippine Revolution. Katipuneros led by Andres Bonifacio fought against Spanish forces in the area.

1901

Cainta became part of the newly created Province of Rizal under American administration, named after national hero Jose Rizal.

1950s

Cainta began its transformation from a rural farming town to an urbanized municipality, driven by its proximity to Metro Manila and Pasig City.

2000s

Rapid commercial growth along Ortigas Avenue Extension and Felix Avenue turned Cainta into a major economic hub in Rizal. The Higantes Festival gained national recognition.

Today

With a population of 376,933, Cainta is the most densely populated municipality in Rizal and is known as the "Kakanin Capital of the Philippines" for its famous rice cakes sold at the Cainta Junction.

Higantes Festival

Every November, Cainta celebrates the Higantes Festival featuring giant papier-maché figures in honor of San Isidro Labrador, satirizing oppressive colonial-era landlords.

Manggahan River Esplanade, socialized housing for ISFs, One Cainta Sunset Retreat (only LGU-funded home for the aged in Rizal), and continuous creek dredging for flood control.
